Well, I have now flown across more tiger country than I knew existed. We flew to Carnarvon with a bit of tail wind then headed off over trees and scrub to Karratha. Bush all the way. Landed at “Yarraloola” for some fuel which was given to us free, but it had sediment in it. Luckily the fuel filter system did not block up and I got heaps and heaps of rubbish out of the sediment bowls for many days afterward. There were a few miss fires in the motor and some funny running but it never stopped. Just as well, as the whole trip across the top of Australia was over rough country with nowhere to land, some of it very dangerous in the event of engine trouble. I lodged flight plans for the first time over here as know one knew where we were if there was trouble.
Flying into Broome was very beautiful. Big wide, white beaches and real tropical looking place, amazing corrugated iron buildings and heaps of character. Unfortunately the indigenous population were mostly from Fitzroy crossing and there for the booze, as they couldn’t get it at home.

Broome was very pretty with wide beaches and a quaint town
Derby was very desolate and windy (35kts) on the ground and we flew on to “Drysdale River”, which was alike an oasis in a desert. After nothing but bush and trees since Derby, we saw a large dirt airfield appear. We were picked up by a 4WD and taken to a beautiful lush place in the bush where tourists stay and do trips in the Kimberly and north to various ocean gorges.
We flew out to Kununurra a bit late but made at last light. It was really pretty flying past cliffs and plateaus lit by the setting sun, and Kununurra was a lovely friendly place to arrive. We were able to get fuel for the plane straight away, a lift to a motel, a lift to a restaurant and next day, back to the airport. I will have to come back here some time to look at the Kimberly’s.
